Bugs & Buses

My upbringing was pretty much funded by VWSA the South African Volkswagen manufacturer.

Based in a small town called now calledKariega, 37 kilometres from the commercial port of Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape Province, my father spent most of his working life at VW.

In 1979, I took a part-time clerical job there while I sorted out my matric and university era.

My first car was a Variant and I owned several beetles thereafter. In 2011, eerily coincidentally, I returned to the plant to install underground earthing systems under the new press plant – huge machines weighing several tons apiece on a reinforced foundation two storeys deep.

The following year, I acquired an Audi Quattro A4, somewhat of a boy racer.

So, it’s pretty logical to assume that I would develop an enduring love for bugs and the surfer vans of the 70’s, ostensibly because I spent quite a bit of time on the beaches of the Eastern Cape.

These days, friends from all over the world send me images of Beetles and Kombis – it has become an endearing symbol of those others whose thoughts I occupy some of the time.

Here follows a gallery of video pieces that demonstrate the beauty of these iconic motor vehicles..
